How to get there?

There are three possible ways to reach the castle entrance:

The first, on foot…

  • Accessing it on foot is an enriching experience that combines history, nature and panoramic views. There are two main routes you can take to reach the castle on foot, and here’s how to find them and what to expect from each.

  • 1. Access from Mundo Nuevo

    Route: approx. 20 minutes duration.

To get to this route, start from Plaza de la Merced, one of the most central points in Malaga. From there, head towards Calle Mundo Nuevo, a small, steep street that leads out of the area known as El Ejido. This road takes you straight up the hillside of Gibralfaro.

The climb is steep and the route runs along a cobbled path through Mediterranean vegetation and its particular fauna, as you may come across squirrels, chameleons, rabbits… As you ascend, you can enjoy partial views of the historic centre of Malaga, the port and the sea. Although it is a somewhat demanding route due to the incline, it is ideal for those looking for a more natural, peaceful experience in the shade of the trees. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and bring water.

  • 2. Access from the Paseo de Don Juan de Temboury (connection with La Coracha).

    Route: approx. 20 minutes duration.

This second access is more popular and direct, and is very well signposted. You can start at the entrance to the Alcazaba on Calle Alcazabilla, near the Museum of Malaga, and from there continue towards Paseo de Don Juan de Temboury. This avenue is wide and climbs gradually up to the castle hill.

At the halfway point, it coincides with the access up La Coracha. La Coracha is a walled path that offers spectacular views of the port, the bullring and the bay of Malaga. Along the route, historic walls and towers rise up on either side, making this walk a monumental and photogenic experience. The path is less steep than the Mundo Nuevo route and is paved, making it a more accessible option for most people.

  • Both routes lead to the main entrance of the castle. Depending on your preferences, you can opt for a more natural and peaceful walk through Mundo Nuevo or a historic and panoramic walk from the Paseo de Temboury and La Coracha.

The second, by bus…

  • If you prefer to access the Gibralfaro Castle in a more comfortable way, you can opt for the Malaga city bus. The line that will take you to the top of the hill is line 35, which drops you off at the entrance to the castle.

  • Where to catch the bus
The bus line 35 has several stops in the centre of Malaga. One of the most convenient is the one located on Paseo del Parque, one of the city’s main thoroughfares, just a few metres from Malaga’s town hall. Another option is to take it from the Plaza de la Marina, which is next to Calle Larios and very close to the port.
  • Journey time
The bus journey from the centre of Malaga to Gibralfaro Castle takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic. It’s a relatively short trip that will allow you to relax as you climb the hill.
  • Bus frequency
Line 35 has a fairly good frequency, with a bus approximately every 20 to 30 minutes. During the tourist months, or in high season, it is advisable to check the timetables in advance to avoid long waits.
