Guided tour of Gibralfaro Castle with entrance

Share this:

Description

For an hour and a half, you will walk with your guide along the narrow battlements and crenellations of the castle, experiencing the same route that the ancient watchmen took in their task of protecting the fortress. From this impressive height, the guide will explain how Gibralfaro became an impregnable bastion of Al-Andalus and its key role in the defence of Malaga, particularly during the Christian conquest in 1487. During the tour, we will also enter the Torre Blanca, a watchtower designed to further strengthen the defences, and the Barbican, the only entrance to the castle at the time that connected to the Alcazaba.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the visit is discovering the water supply and collection system that the Arab people designed for the fortress. This system of wells and cisterns was essential in the defence of the castle, ensuring the water supply during long periods of siege.

The visit ends inside the castle, where the guide will stop at the best point so you can witness what is undoubtedly one of the best sunsets in Malaga. From this natural viewpoint, you will see how the city is tinged with warm tones as the sun descends on the horizon, an unforgettable moment that you can capture and enjoy calmly. At the end, you will have the freedom to explore the castle on your own and take photos at your own pace, taking home unique memories of this tour that makes Gibralfaro an incomparable historical and visual experience.

The main difference between Gibralfaro Castle and the Alcazaba lies in their construction periods and their specific functions within the fortified complex. The Alcazaba was built around the year 755, during the reign of Abd-al-Rahman I, and served as a palace-fortress to protect the city and house the nobility. On the other hand, Gibralfaro Castle was built between 1344 and 1354 under the reign of Yusuf I, with a higher defensive function, reinforcing the protection of the Alcazaba and offering a strategic place of surveillance. Both were connected by the walled passage known as “la coracha,” which completes the fortified complex and allowed safe passage between both structures.

Since both monuments are open-air spaces, it is important to take some precautions to enjoy the visit comfortably and safely. On very hot days, we recommend wearing a cap or hat, sunscreen and enough water to stay well hydrated.

The entire route involves approximately 2,500 steps, so it is advisable to wear light clothing and comfortable shoes to make moving around easier. Please note that in the case of the Alcazaba, around 70% of the route is on a slope, so a good choice of footwear is essential to avoid discomfort and fatigue.

In addition, the weather can vary, so in cooler seasons it is also suggested to bring a light jacket.

To visit the castle, there is a parking area with limited spaces at the entrance.
