Description

Over the course of an hour and a half at each monument, you will discover, with the help of our qualified guides, all of them from Malaga and experts in the history of these fortifications, the wonders and secrets of the most impregnable fortress in Al-Andalus. In the morning, we will begin the tour at the Alcazaba, where you will explore its narrow walled corridors and its strategic angled doors, designed to hinder the advance of the enemy and allow defense from the inside. In this palatial construction, you will be able to admire gardens and fountains that still preserve the Arabic charm and understand the architecture, culture and customs of this people.

After visiting the Alcazaba, we will go up to the Gibralfaro Castle, touring its impressive barbican, the only entrance to the castle that connects with the Alcazaba and shows the defensive ingenuity of this construction. On the tour of the castle, you will experience the old watchmen as you walk along its crenellated battlements, enjoying a privileged view of Malaga from above and understanding how this fortress resisted the toughest sieges, especially during the Christian conquest in 1487.

We finish the tour with a stop at the best viewpoint of the castle to witness an unparalleled sunset, while Malaga is bathed in warm tones. At the end, you will have free time to explore both monuments and capture memories at your own pace.

As both monuments are open-air spaces, it is important to take some precautions to enjoy the visit comfortably and safely. On very hot days, we recommend wearing a hat or cap, sunscreen and enough water to stay well hydrated.

The entire route involves approximately 2,500 steps, so it is advisable to wear light clothing and comfortable shoes to make it easier to move around. Please note that, in the case of the Alcazaba, around 70% of the route is on a slope, so a good choice of footwear is essential to avoid discomfort and fatigue.

In addition, the weather can vary, so in cooler seasons it is also suggested to bring a light jacket.

It can be accessed, but our recommendation is not to do so. The pavement is uneven, narrow and uneven, making it impracticable to walk comfortably. We will advise you where to leave the trolley before starting the visit so that you can make the most of the experience.

The guided tour includes admission to the monument, its management and direct access through the group door, thus avoiding waiting in queues. Everything is organised by a qualified local guide, who will welcome and accompany you during the tour, providing you with all the necessary information and making sure you have a unique experience.

In addition, the visit to the Alcazaba includes the Roman Theatre if access is available; otherwise, an explanation will be given from the closest possible point.

Regular tours are offered in English and Spanish.

During the tour, it is advisable not to take photographs so as not to miss any detail of the guided tour. Of course it is! Our tour is ideal for all ages, including the youngest visitors. As qualified guides and leaders in school visits, we strive to offer a fun and educational experience that awakens young people’s interest in history and culture. We are not just an audio guide; our aim is to immerse each visitor in the past in a dynamic and captivating way.

The maximum limit per group is 30 people per guide and a minimum of 4.

The main difference between Gibralfaro Castle and the Alcazaba lies in their periods of construction and their specific functions within the fortified complex. The Alcazaba was built around 755, during the reign of Abd-al-Rahman I, and served as a palace-fortress to protect the city and house the nobility. Gibralfaro Castle, on the other hand, was erected between 1344 and 1354 under the reign of Yusuf I, with a higher defensive function, reinforcing the protection of the Alcazaba and providing a strategic watchtower. Both were connected by the walled corridor known as “la coracha,” which completes the fortified complex and allowed safe passage between the two structures.
